Swimming Pool Membrane, Fewer Leaks

blue oceanYou notice the problem when the pool level drops overnight, then find a damp strip beside the shell or a blister under the finish. A membrane can prevent that pattern, but only when the surface beneath it is ready. The usual mistake is treating the coating as a cosmetic layer that will hide cracks, dust, or weak concrete. It will not. A pool membrane is a continuous waterproof barrier, and its performance depends on bonded contact across the whole area. Before choosing a swimming pool membrane, inspect the shell, edges, penetrations, and drainage conditions.

Preparation takes longer than rolling on the material, yet it determines whether the repair lasts. Remove loose laitance, old flaking coatings, grease, algae, and curing residues. Laitance is the weak, powdery cement film that can form at the concrete surface; if the membrane sticks to it rather than sound concrete, the bond can fail with the film. Open cracks should be cleaned and assessed instead of simply painted over. At skimmers, lights, drains, and pipe entries, check for movement and gaps. These transition points need careful detailing because water exploits small discontinuities.

Moisture in the shell creates another source of trouble. Hydrostatic pressure means groundwater or trapped moisture pushes against the pool structure and coating. If that pressure is greater than the membrane’s bond, it can produce bubbles, peeling, or localized debonding. A pool built into a wet hillside may show this after heavy rain, while an older pool may develop dampness behind a patch. Do not assume extra coats will solve it. Identify where moisture is coming from, allow the substrate to reach the product’s stated condition, and address drainage or structural water entry where the site requires it.

Application thickness also matters. A thin, uneven coat may look covered while leaving pinholes, which are tiny breaks that form a path for water. A heavy coat can cure poorly, sag on walls, or trap moisture beneath the surface. Measure coverage rather than relying on appearance, and work methodically around corners and fittings. Apply the material within the manufacturer’s temperature and humidity limits, because drying and curing are different processes. Drying describes surface evaporation; curing is the chemical development of the membrane’s final properties. Rushing the next coat can weaken both.

Consider a renovation where the owner fills the pool the morning after the last coat. The surface may feel firm, but water pressure, chemicals, and mechanical cleaning immediately test an incompletely cured film. Follow the product’s recoat and immersion guidance, and protect the area from dust, rain, and foot traffic during that period. If a repair meets an existing membrane, feather and clean the overlap rather than leaving a sharp ridge. A visible edge is not automatically a defect, but an unsealed edge can become a starting point for lifting.

Corners and changes of plane deserve more attention than broad flat areas. Concrete can move slightly as temperature and moisture change, and rigid finishes often crack where walls meet the floor or around steps. Reinforcing fabric, flexible detailing material, or a compatible sealant may be specified for these locations, depending on the system. The principle is simple: preserve continuity while allowing the joint to move as designed. Never bridge an active structural crack without understanding it. If the shell continues moving, the new membrane may only conceal the issue until the crack transfers through.

A careful handover includes more than a filled pool. Record the substrate repairs, coats applied, curing time, and any areas that needed special detailing. Keep fittings clean so covers seat properly and water can circulate as intended. During service, use the pool’s maintenance instructions and inspect early for blisters, pinholes, discoloration, or lifting at edges. Small defects are easier to investigate before water reaches the substrate. For broader planning, pool waterproofing guidance can help frame the work, but site conditions and the selected system should guide the final method.
