It is quite comical looking back forty to fifty years or more, at the modest football scoreboards of that time and how impressively, even spectacularly, they have advanced in the intervening years.
Early scoreboards simply told the half time scores from a few selected games that were identified by a single letter which was matched to a list printed in the match-day programme.
Fast forward to present day and technology has enabled the scoreboard to now provide LED displays, giving more or less any information the host club can budget for.
It might be a simple cost effective version, giving just the basic, score and countdown clock. Alternatively, in the case of the larger, wealthier clubs; huge full colour video screens, visible from the opposite end of the pitch are common place; providing scrolling advertisement messaging and allowing live coverage, with action replays.
