The Riviera Maya Mexico is one of the country’s top resort areas. Located south of Cancun, the stretch of coast is famous for its beautiful beaches, luxurious all-inclusive resorts, and a variety of water sports offered. An easy day trip from the beaches, one of the highlights of the area is the Mayan walled city of Tulum, which has a dramatic setting on a clifftop overlooking the ocean. The city was built during the 13th and 14th centuries and was first discovered and explored by Europeans in the early 16th century. Many area hotels and resorts offer tours to the ruins of Tulum, often combining a visit with a few hours spent diving or snorkeling. It’s also possible to visit Tulum yourself, although hiring a guide when you get there ensures a more enjoyable and informative experience, and doesn’t cost much.
